Two-thirds are Active members, or salaried or freelance writers, editors or contributors actively engaged in producing travel-related content for newspapers, magazines, the Web or specialty publications. Associate members, or public relations professionals working in the field of travel and tourism, comprise the other one-third. Each year, MTWA holds two meetings for its members (spring and fall) in various sites across the U.S. and sometimes even throughout the world. Destinations that host us range from towns, cities and states to regions and even countries; during the past few years, for example, we’ve been hosted by such groups as Central Iowa; South Korea; Portland, Maine; and Cincinnati, Ohio. What’s in it for the host? Publicity! And lots of it. Spotlighting your travel destination for a group of professional travel journalists and photographers typically results in dozens of travel articles, not only in the initial months following the conference, but for years afterwards.
